An annual comprehensive exam keeps your vision sharp for a demanding life and protects the long-term health of your eyes, often before you would notice anything is wrong.
Why an annual exam matters
There are no pain receptors inside the eye, so most eye diseases give no early warning. By the time symptoms appear, some changes can be permanent. A yearly exam lets our doctors detect and address problems early, while they are most manageable.
Your eyes can also reveal signs of conditions elsewhere in the body, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. A comprehensive exam looks after your vision and your overall health together.
What we check
Every exam at Sunny Optometry is tailored to you, but most include the following:
- A detailed conversation about your health, medications, work and visual demands
- Visual acuity and a precise refraction for glasses
- Eye alignment, focusing and binocular vision
- Eye pressure testing as part of glaucoma screening
- Evaluation of the front of the eye, including the eyelids, cornea and tear film
- A thorough look at the retina and optic nerve, with advanced imaging when helpful

Our doctors diagnose and manage refractive conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism and presbyopia, as well as eye diseases including glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and dry eye.

Questions, answered
How long does a comprehensive eye exam take?
Plan for about an hour, including pre-testing, time with your doctor, and any imaging. If your eyes are dilated, allow a little extra time.
Will my eyes be dilated?
Dilation gives your doctor the clearest view of the retina and optic nerve. Your doctor will recommend it when it is medically helpful and discuss alternatives where appropriate.
Does a comprehensive exam include a contact lens fitting?
A contact lens exam is a separate service with additional tests and time. Let us know when booking if you wear or want to wear contacts.
What should I bring?
Bring a government issued ID, a list of your medications and supplements, your current glasses and sunglasses, and any contact lens boxes or prescriptions.
