Insurance and Payment in Santa Monica

Transparent costs, flexible payment, and help every step of the way. Here is how insurance, reimbursement and payment work at Sunny Optometry.

What open access means

Sunny Optometry is an open access provider. That means most vision insurance companies may reimburse a portion or all of the cost of your eye exams, prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses and contact lenses, even when we are not in their network.

We participate with Vision Service Plan (VSP) and Medicare (PPO only). We are not a Medi-Cal provider. Every plan is different, and our team is happy to help you review your benefits before your visit.

Reimbursement in three steps

Applying for reimbursement directly from your insurance company is simple:

  • Step 1: Find your carrier's claim form. Common carriers include Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Davis Vision, Humana, National Vision Administrators, Spectera and UnitedHealthcare Vision. If yours is not listed, contact your insurer for instructions.
  • Step 2: Complete the claim form and submit it with your itemized receipts. You can always email or visit us to request copies of your receipts.
  • Step 3: Get money back. Reimbursement typically arrives within a few weeks, depending on your provider.

FSA and HSA

Flexible spending and health savings accounts can typically be used for eye exams, prescription eyewear, contact lenses and many eye care products. It is a smart way to use pre-tax dollars on your vision.

Financing options

We offer financing through CareCredit and Sunbit, so you can spread the cost of eyewear and treatment over time. Ask our team for details.

Pay a bill online

You can pay an outstanding balance securely online from your patient account. Copays and professional fees are due at the time of service.

Questions, answered

How do I know what my plan covers?

Contact your insurance company before your appointment to understand your benefits, deductibles and copays. Our team can also help review your benefits on request.

Why doesn't Medicare cover refraction or glasses?

Medicare provides benefits for medical services. Routine vision care, such as refraction and glasses, is generally not included.

Why doesn't my insurance cover my contact lens exam?

Some vision plans include contact lens exams and others do not. Your plan administrator can tell you whether it can be added.

Can the no-show fee be billed to insurance?

No. The $85 no-show or late cancellation fee is the patient's responsibility and cannot be billed to insurance.
