Pediatric Eye Exams in Santa Monica
Much of what children learn comes through their eyes. A friendly, thorough exam makes sure your child sees clearly and comfortably at school, on the field, and on screens.

More than a school screening
A school vision screening checks how well a child sees across the room. It does not assess how the eyes focus up close, how they work together, or whether the eyes are healthy. A comprehensive pediatric exam looks at all of it.
Children rarely complain about their vision because they assume everyone sees the way they do. Regular exams catch problems that could otherwise be mistaken for trouble with reading, attention or coordination.
What we check
Our doctors adapt every test to your child's age and comfort level.
- Visual acuity and prescription for glasses
- Eye alignment and eye teaming
- Focusing ability for reading and near work
- Screening for amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus
- The health of the front and back of the eye
Watching for myopia
Nearsightedness often begins and progresses in childhood, and more time on screens and indoors may play a role. If your child is becoming more nearsighted, we can talk about myopia management options designed to address that progression.
Eyewear kids actually want to wear
Our opticians help children choose durable, comfortable frames they are proud of, with lenses suited to active days.
Questions, answered
When should my child have a first eye exam?
Many eye doctors recommend a first exam in infancy, another before starting school, and yearly exams through the school years. Ask us about the right timing for your child.
Can you examine a child who cannot read letters yet?
Yes. We use pictures, shapes and objective tests that do not require reading, so even young children can be examined accurately.
Is screen time hurting my child's eyes?
Prolonged screen time can contribute to eye strain and dryness, and may be linked with myopia. Regular breaks, time outdoors, and annual exams all help.
